Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant
As a General Assistant, your role is diverse and action-packed. You will contribute to a wide range of store activities daily. These include:
Customer Assistance and Sales Support
- Greet customers warmly and respond to queries with a helpful attitude.
- Guide customers through their shopping experience by assisting with locating products and making informed choices.
- Demonstrate product usage, explain benefits, and provide comparisons when necessary.
- Promote ongoing promotions and specials to enhance the shopping experience and increase sales.
Checkout and Payment Processing
- Operate POS (Point of Sale) systems to process both cash and card payments accurately.
- Issue receipts, process refunds or exchanges, and maintain accuracy in all transactions.
- Handle till discrepancies efficiently and report issues to the supervisor or manager.
Stock Control and Merchandising
- Receive deliveries, unpack stock, and update inventory systems where needed.
- Ensure shelves and fridges are full, clean, and attractively organized.
- Replenish fast-selling items quickly to prevent stockouts.
- Monitor and correct incorrect pricing labels to ensure pricing accuracy.
- Support stock-taking exercises by counting and recording inventory precisely.
Store Cleanliness and Safety
- Keep the store, storeroom, kitchen, and other designated areas clean and free of hazards.
- Dispose of packaging and waste properly in designated skip bins.
- Follow safety and environmental protocols, including fire drills and emergency evacuations.
Essential Requirements to Qualify
We’re looking for individuals who meet the following core qualifications:
- Matric certificate (Grade 12)
- Clear criminal record
- Experience in customer service or retail (e.g., General Assistant, General Worker, Butchery Assistant, Clerk, or Wrapper)
- Basic English communication skills
- Must live within 25km of the job location
Preferred (But Not Required) Attributes
- South African citizenship
- Aged between 18 and 65 years
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Energetic and dependable work ethic
