Successful candidates will complete the learner basic pharmacist assistant course, preparing them to register with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC). Once fully qualified, learners may receive permanent employment as Basic Pharmacist Assistants within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate.
  • Minimum 50% in Pure Mathematics, Life Sciences, or Physical Science.
  • Overall average of at least 50%.

These qualifications ensure that candidates possess the fundamental academic background to handle pharmaceutical responsibilities effectively.

Key Job Responsibilities

As a Dispensary Support staff member, you will assist in various pharmacy operations under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. Responsibilities include:

  • Selling Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances according to pharmacy regulations.
  • Assisting with compounding, preparation, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines following approved formulas and standard operating procedures.
  • Unpacking and merchandising stock, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring proper organization of dispensary and OTC shelves.
  • Accurately interpreting prescriptions and dispensing medication under supervision.
  • Supporting the pharmacist in checking, labeling, and packaging medication.
  • Maintaining stock control by monitoring expiry dates and managing Schedule 1–5 medicines.
  • Providing excellent customer service by following up on prescription tracking, patient appointments, and call center scripts.
  • Offering information to customers to promote health awareness and medication safety.
  • Assisting with medical scheme authorizations for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication.
  • Reporting out-of-stock or low-stock items to the dispensary manager.
  • Receiving and processing dispensary stock according to company procedures.

This role provides valuable, hands-on experience in a fast-paced retail pharmacy environment.

  • Familiarity with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting systems.
  • Knowledge of family planning, complementary medicines, and over-the-counter products.
