How to Register Your CV with the Department of Labour (ESSA)

The South African Department of Employment and Labour uses the Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) online platform to connect job seekers with available employment and training opportunities. Registering your profile and CV on ESSA is a crucial step for accessing government-backed jobs, learnerships, and more.

This is a free service provided by the Department.

Step 1: Access the ESSA Online Platform

The entire registration process can be completed online:

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the official Department of Employment and Labour website.
  2. Look for and click on “Online Services” (often found in the main menu).
  3. Select the “Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA)” link to be directed to the registration portal.

Step 2: Create a New Individual Profile

On the ESSA landing page, you will see options for both Individuals (Job Seekers) and Organisations (Employers).

  1. Click on the link to “Register Individual” or “Register as a New User”.
  2. Carefully read the terms and conditions or the disclaimer, and then click “I Accept” and “Submit” (or similar).

Step 3: Enter Your Personal & Contact Information

You will be presented with a registration form. You must provide accurate details to create your basic account:

  • ID/Passport Details: Your South African ID number or a valid Passport number for non-citizens.
  • Basic Details: Your surname and first name.
  • Contact Details: A valid and active email address and phone number. Your login information will often be sent to your email.
  • Security Check: Complete the security text (CAPTCHA) and click “Register”.

Step 4: Verify Your Account and Log In

After submitting the form:

  1. Check the email address you provided for an activation link or a verification code/password from the ESSA system.
  2. Use the link or details to verify and activate your profile.
  3. Return to the ESSA homepage and use your new login credentials to access your dashboard.

  • Education and Qualifications: Enter all your academic details, including your highest qualification, institutions attended, and field of study.

  • Skills: Clearly list all your technical and soft skills.
