Key Responsibilities of the Mining Operator Role
At Sasol, mining operators play a vital role in achieving daily and long-term performance targets. The responsibilities are tailored to promote safety, productivity, and excellence.
Production & Safety Leadership
Manage crew operations to meet daily production targets. Strict adherence to Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) policies. Perform gas testing, ventilation inspections, and statutory checks. Conduct shift change inspections to maintain equipment and safety compliance. Act as Relieving Shift Boss when necessary and represent your crew in Operational Excellence (OE) meetings.
Operational Execution and Compliance
Oversee pillar extraction and complex underground mining activities. Ensure proper usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe handling of tools. Facilitate fire patrols, conduct rescue drills, and ensure rapid team response protocols. Submit fully completed, accurate shift and crew reports. Ensure SAP entries, such as time and attendance, procurement requisitions, and materials ordering, are up to date.
Team Development & Skills Transfer
Identify skills gaps and development needs among crew members. Provide coaching and feedback to ensure continuous improvement and high crew competence. Maintain valid licensing and training records in compliance with NQF standards and the company’s training matrix.
Essential Qualifications & Certifications
To be eligible for this role at Sasol’s underground coal mining operations, candidates must possess the following:
- National Senior Certificate or Full N3 with English/Business English and Mathematics
- Blasting Certificate (Underground, Fiery Mines) – mandatory
- Gas Testing Certificate (8 Gases)
- Competent A Certificate
- Valid First Aid Certificate
- Valid Driver’s License
- Red Ticket (or ability to obtain one)
- Flameproof Certificate – desirable
Required Work Experience
Candidates must have at least:
- 2+ years of experience in underground coal mining
- Proven ability to manage crews and ensure adherence to safety and performance standards

Maintain housekeeping standards and orderliness within the mining section. Manage attendance registers, request materials, and perform time management on SAP.
