Are you passionate about engineering, technology, and innovation? The Umfolozi Sugar Mill (USM) invites aspiring artisans to apply for its 2025 Apprenticeship Programme. Situated just 48km from Richards Bay, USM is nestled between the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park and the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, making it one of the most iconic sugar mills in South Africa.
About Umfolozi Sugar Mill
Established in 1913, Umfolozi Sugar Mill is a key player in the sugar industry, crushing over 1.3 million tons of sugarcane annually to produce 135,000 tons of VHP brown sugar and 40,000 tons of molasses. As a progressive and forward-thinking organization, USM offers top-tier training opportunities in the sugar manufacturing sector.
Available Apprenticeship Fields:
- Mechanical Fitting
- Welding
- Electrical Engineering
- Instrumentation
Minimum Requirements:
- Matric certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science
- N4 certificate in one of the relevant fields
- N6/SA qualification will be an added advantage
- Previous practical experience in a manufacturing or heavy industry environment will be advantageous
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team
- Computer literacy
- Good timekeeping and attendance
- High level of discipline, self-motivation, and enthusiasm to learn
Programme Details:
- A structured 3-year training programme covering phases 1, 2, and 3 at Shukela Training Centre
- Hands-on learning under the mentorship of qualified artisans
- Upon successful completion, candidates may be offered a 6-month artisan experience placement
- Exposure to cutting-edge sugar industry technology
- Clear career path with potential for growth into supervisory roles
